Meeting customers for the first time

November9

It can be a difficult thing to meet with new customers. There can be a lot of anxiety from both ends. You want to make the best first impression and they want to make sure that you understand what they want to accomplish. Here are a few simple steps you can do to better understand your customer on a first meeting.

Ask questions:
Often times our customers work in different industries that we do, thus they use a different vocabulary. If they use a term you don’t know, don’t be afraid to ask what it means. This will show them that you are willing to admit when you need help.

Listen with an open mind:
It’s vital that when you first meet with a new customer that you let them do the talking. Let them become comfortable with you. There will be plenty of time later to show them how smart you are.

Meet them on their turf:
While it may be tempting to meet with a new customer at a fancy restaurant for the first meeting, we find that it’s better to meet with them in their own environment. This will give them the opportunity to shine in their own element. You will also get a chance to observe how they interact with their coworkers and they way they expect to be treated.
